Book Review: Roman by Heidi McLaughlin & Amy Briggs

I haven’t written a book review in a minute. Why? Because I’m swallowed in my own writing to give my fellow authors a fair chance. But when one of your favorite indie authors pairs up with another fantastic author you line up for a chance to read the words. That’s what happened here.

I have read Heidi and Amy’s work. I love their style, and their prose. They can write intense characters but also bring in the sweetest or romances. When I heard that this was a dual venture in the paranormal world, I was even more excited. Paranormal and fantasy were my first loves in books.

Now the book, Roman. Roman is intense, and he should be. I like his character a lot. He’s well developed and the reader easily falls into his story. There is depth and value in him. Roman is likable and likable quickly.

Now Fiona, I’m a bit bias, I like her name. She is the one that at first I wasn’t sure about until the story built. Fiona also has depth and she brings a whole lot to the relationship and story development. Now that I’ve read the story through, I get Fiona and I love her. Trust these ladies, they know what they’re doing with their characters. Two thumbs up on character development.

Now, Heidi and Amy nailed the story and plot. They created a world that was easily followed but also had layers of complication that added twists. I’m not one to giveaway plots and high point conflicts so you have to read the book but they nailed it here. Seriously, good work.

Roman and Fiona struggle and fight against all odds to be together. Heidi and Amy do a good job leading a reader down a great journey, a journey I highly recommend you take.

Only thing I’m disappointed with is that this is a stand alone. I wish there was more, but I always do when I love the characters. Who doesn’t?

Everything about him tells her to stay away, yet she can’t seem to get the vampire out of her mind.

For Fiona, vampires are off limits, evil members of society, until the one known as Roman crosses her path and shows her he’s no different than her.

Author Interview: Nancee Cain

Today, I am SO excited to introduce to you one of my favorite authors, Nancee Cain. She is one of few people to hold my hand in this industry, and probably one of the few authors I can say I pray for them to hit it big, because they truly deserve it. I can’t wait to share you her work!

Without further delay, here is Nancee Cain, romance with a serrated edge!

Nancee Cain ❤
1. Tell us about yourself. Where are you from? Do you write full time?
I’m Nancee Cain and I live in the backwoods of Alabama. I work full time as a nurse/counselor in the field of addiction. I’m addicted to coffee, my TBR pile is ridiculously long and I love to stalk my favorite authors for signed swag. I’m an autograph collector and amateur photographer.
2. How did you get into writing
I’ve written stories since I was a kid. In Jr. High School my goal was to make my friends cry with my horrible, angsty short stories.
3. What does your writing space look like? Do you want to share a photo?
I work in a corner of my bedroom. And no, I’m afraid you’d call Hoarders on me.
4. Do you have a favorite book of your own? If not, which book was the hardest to write?
Wow. That’s like asking which is your favorite child. Saving Evangeline was my first published, so it’s really close to my heart. My just released novel, The Resurrection of Dylan McAthie is my very first completed novel. And Tempting Jo was just fun to write. There’s a lot of me in Jo.
5. Pick one of your books (if you have more than one), and if it were being made into a movie, who would play the lead roles? Why?
The Resurrection of Dylan McAthie. He’s actually a bit too old for the role, but Jared Leto is how I picture Dylan, and Hannah James as Jennifer Adams.
6. If someone is brand new to your work, what book do you think they should start with?
It depends. If they like paranormal, Saving Evangeline. Contemporary, The Resurrection of Dylan McAthie.
7. What would you like readers to take away from your writing?
Life isn’t perfect. We all face hardship. But life is easier and 100% better when you find the person who “gets you” and loves you, flaws and all.
8. Anything else you’d like to share with your readers?
I LOVE hearing from my readers. I’m always on fb/twitter/instagram. Come find me!
Thank you Nancee for visiting us. I look forward to celebrating your official release Wednesday!

Review: Blood Laws (Immortal Curse Series Book 1) by Lexi C. Foss

516N-AtOFdL._SY445_QL70_Blood Laws is the first book in Lexi C. Foss’ Immortal Curse Series, a paranormal romance novel.  (Even if paranormal is not your thing, I highly suggest you keep reading.)

Stas is my kinda lady, sarcastic yet feminine. She has a bit sass (though she hates being referred to that), but the twist is that she has a unique psychic ability to influence others.

Isaac. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Isaac. He is here to avenge a wrong. He is handsome, successful and hard to resist.

The way Lexi weaves Stas and Issac together through a twist of suspense. This read is thoroughly entertaining. I read this in 24 hours.

Lexi C. Foss has a beautiful style that grips you from the beginning. The book is formatted to be easily read and the chapters are in good size lengths. This is important to me because I struggle with stopping mid chapter in any book.

Will I recommend this book to my friends? Absolutely. I will recommend to my friends who like romance, and insist that even if they don’t read paranormal to try Lexi a try. Her ability to keep you at the edge of your seat is addicting.

Will I purchase this book when it comes? Yes. Already one clicked it! You should too, or order the paper back.

Where can I get a copy? You can find a paperback and kindle version of this book on Amazon. The release date is May 2.

Until my next post – tata!

Review: From Paris to Forever by Savannah Blaize **UPDATED for order info**

Cover Design by Jay Aheer from Simply Defined Art

One of the best (and hardest) parts of being a reviewer is reading an ARC before everyone else. As a reviewer I get to take a peek into a magical world before everyone else, and am dealt with the task of reviewing the work authentically and honestly. It is always my honor to review debut novels from authors that are unpublished and from those I am new to, and this book is one of them.

From Paris to Forever is Savannah Blaize’s debut novel. The best way to describe this story is, a slow burn. (A play on words if you’ve read the book.) The story is based on Chloe, your main female character who suffers a career-ending injury. She returns home to handle the estate of her father who recently passed away. She is fiercely independent but struggles to open her heart to others.  Then you meet, Todd. Todd is a businessman with his eyes set on Chloe’s property. He is a player, a heartbreaker and he was determined to get his hands on Chloe’s land to make himself a profit.

Savannah does a beautiful job taking you through the roller coaster (but not in a bad way) journey Chloe and Todd take together. Baggage from both has to be undone for their relationship to work. Do they manage to unpack all the emotions their souls carry and break down walls that protect their hearts? As a reader, you get to see it from a unique perspective and fall in love with both Chloe and Todd, together.

Savannah’s strength is in developing Chloe and Todd into characters that you love. She pulls their strengths and weaknesses together without being cliché. I personally hated Todd, but that was a sign that she was doing her job in creating this character for the reader. Trust me though, you grow to love Todd by the end. #TeamTodd , anyone?

There is a lot of emotion in this book, and you ride them all. There is a moment where I wanted to hate Savannah for making something happen. (I will not spoil it), but it was a much needed boat rocking for the reader and for one of the main characters. If you like this kind of experience you really should pick this up.

This is the part that is new to my new reviews, instead of rating the books by stars, I will rate them by the following questions:

Will I recommend this book to my friends?    YES! Especially my friends who like to fall in love with the characters and ride the roller coaster with them. This book isn’t for the reader looking for a hot sizzling romance. This book is for the romance-lover, heart on the sleeve reader.

Will I purchase this book when it comes out? Yes. I believe this book deserves leverage in the market. It is a story beautifully written and thoughtfully put together.

Savannah is just beginning her following, so look for more updated links as she develops them.

Review Changes: Screw the Stars

So. I’ve been chewing on how to change how I review books.

I hate the star system. It doesn’t capture the depth of my review. I may love the characters but not the POV. I may also hate the ending but love the story. How do stars capture that?

They don’t. For the sake of my blog I will have a standard set of questions at the end to sum up my feelings.

Not every book is for every reader. That includes me as a reviewer. I will follow Amazon and GR rules for stars but on my turf, it is my rules!

Review: Thirty Days: Part One by BT Urruela

My Rating: *****

I meant to write this on the day of release (Feb 28), but life got in the way. That evil day job just had to interfere in my love for books. I happened to be off on BT Urruela’s release day. I chose to spend a few hours in the morning to read it.

First, it ends in a cliffhanger, so I suggest those who get frustrated with cliffhangers to purchase Part One and then wait until Part Two is released. BT promises this is soon.

Second, clearly I liked this book. If I didn’t, I would not have reviewed it instantly on Amazon and I wouldn’t suggest you to buy it. I think you guys are in for a modern romance treat.

Gavin, the protagonist, is an author who is struggling with some demons. He hasn’t moved passed his past relationship and has isolated himself from society. As a result, his writing has faltered and his best friend, Bobby steps in with a challenge.

The challenge is simple. At least, it seems simple outright: 30 Dates in 30 Days. Move on from your passed relationship and get out of your own way.

This is a story about Gavin stepping outside of his comfort zone, and searching his own soul as he meets different woman.

It is funny, candid and faces mental health issues directly in the face. It is an appreciated and a down to earth approach to discussing these issues.

I can’t say too much or I will give the plot away, but Thirty Days: Part One is definitely worth the One Click on Amazon!

Where can you get yourself a copy? Amazon!
